German Shepherd is big size dog. German Shepherd is a herding dog but using as a guard dog, police dog, rescue dog too.
German Shepherds quite active dogs, they will need a big yard. Also this breed is get along very good with kids and family.
There is some myths that says their origin even older like ( BC 500s ) and they are developed directly from wolves and dogs mating. When you see them they really look like wolves. But this is not clear i guess.
Their real popularity in fact spread world wide after first world war. American soldiers brought it to america it said. Also the name 'alsatian' is given them by Englishes. Because of hatred against Germans cause of world wars. They denied this dogs origin from Germany. German Shepherds helped a lot in wars to Germans anyway. Even one of the famous German Shepherd is Hitler' dog 'Blondi'.
They have some bloodlines which are important for pureness such as ' Von Beliz'. It is important because it is hard to find well formed body shape German Shepherd.
Common health problems are hip and elbow dysplasia, spinal problems. Especially hip problems are very common in this breed. Their anatomy is little bit different than other dogs you can see their back is little bit bent backward. It is like a sign for German Shepherd. When they stand it looks like they are preparing to attacking toward something. But in fact it is their normal stand position.
