Bali Governer Elections 2013

   Bali province governor election took place in may. Two candidate run for election of governor and vice-governorship. Made Mangku Pastika with vice president candidate Ketut Sudikerta and Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Puspayoga with Dewa Nyoman Sukrawan was the candidates for governor and vice-governer.

   The votes was very close to each other it said and some rumors about corrupt votes recounted.

   Made Mangku Pastika won election only with about 1000 votes difference. Total voters number is 2.925.679 in Bali. Total valid votes of two rivals got 2.126.472 and 32.762 votes are invalid it said. Pastika took 1.063.734 (%50,02) while Puspayoga gathered 1.062.738 (%49,98) votes.

   After recalculation of the votes Bali Province General Election Commission KPU declared Pasti-Kerta pair as winner of election at KPU office in Denpasar.

   The winner of election was supported by 8 Indonesian political parties Golkar, Demokrat, Hanura, Gerindra, Partai Nasional Benteng Kerakyatan (PNBK), Partai Karya Peduli Bangsa (PKPB), Partai Keadilan dan Persatuan Indonesia (PKPI), and Partai Amanat Nasional (PAN) during elections.

  

  

Weather is changing in Bali?

   Bali is known as tropical climate place. Weather is never very cold. It has  only 2 weather seasons we can say, rain season and dry season. The temperature usually around 25-30⁰ C (70-90⁰ F). Usually rainy but sunny like most tropical places, sometimes monsoons can also seen. Humidity is also high in Bali.

   Bali is considerably small island but climate can change in some places. Because it has high places like Kintamani and Bedugul or Jatiluwih. At this kind of hilly places of Bali are usually cold and you can need thick dresses. Also those areas get more rains than other part of Bali. I can say east part also little bit like that but monsoons can be seen on west. In Bukit there are less rain it said.

   But nowadays it looks like it is changing. Dry season ( between May - September) and wet season ( October-April ). It is June right now and still there is rain and heavy also all May passed with rain I can say. Is it because global warming? I do not know. I think this is also confusing people who visiting this island. Because people are
choosing usually sunny days for sun and sea holidays.

Problems into way of thinking west expats

Expats really knows where they live in?

I read a post on facebook a year ago maybe and article written by so called intellectual, artist, hi-class person about kid beggars on the streets of Bali. The thing is not this problem, the thing is i want to talk those foreigners including hi profile to low profile they do not have any idea where they live in what is this east asian country all about and way of their thinking etc....

That person (i do not want to give his name) was saying those kids from Bali while 99 percent of them from outside of the island. the thing is here this person living here for more than 3 decades and he is not even aware of that. This indicate us something.

Same thing about few years ago governor banned a video film about Bali beaches and its surfing teachers (locals) and same thing there was. The movie maker was saying those people (bali cowboys) were Balinese while again most of them are not Balinese in fact but the outsiders(people like from Jawa or other islands came to island for work or better life etc.). I do not accuse any people here from their acts. But the thing lay behind their mind.

Or another one I seen on youtube while I searching something about island. The guy saying traffic polices ask bribes from tourism who rent bike and saying renting person not asking from them licenses. It is funny because this is not the way justice or law works. If they not ask you license then do not take it it is that simple. Or if someone ask bribe it is easy just do not give it. I am agree corrupted and bribery common here but your point of view is very strange. Those foreigners also make aa lot of money by corruption here. Most of villas are on greenbelts which supposed to be green areas. Or an extreme sample is about wine production stolen by foreigner guy which given to farmers as grant by government to improve farmers as subsidy and same guy in kind of foundation talking about cleaning beaches.

Those foundation even more dramatic for me at least. Those guys talking about bad locals and islands while they taking a lot of donations and make money from villas etc..

So what you suggest? Should not we talk about problems? No you can talk about problems. But the difference between you talk with your friend about it on cafes and publish it on media every single day. those two different thing. Plus I also complain for example about traffic but I can not solve that problem if someone give me responsibility nor you can not.It is a big job which a lot of engineers etc.. should involve.

Plus let me tell you , you can not even try the same thing into so called democracy places west countries. For example go to holland and publish a newspaper and talk about their royal family morning and evening every single day, for example say why the heck there is a monarchy like structure here. And see what happens...Those kind of things nothing to do with lawyers , judge it is government to government things(g2g).

Also i seen a few blogs written here by expats. Mostly talking about their citizens in jail here and most of them drug dealers. Very strangely they kind of defending them and ask pity all the time. While they talking about police or money changer who overcharge them 3-5 dollars on streets and their people was earning millions from villas or stolen projects like winery which can be millions of dollars.

And in same blog the guy talking about hookers and aids and they not properly checking health controls. If you go only around Kuta area and live around there and thinking only this place is Bali then sorry. I know even most of island locals do not even know where this place is and never been there while you never quit from there. And this guy writing something about this island like authority. Wow impressive ..

This is Hippocratic. It reminds me opium wars in china. Once i read a historian the English one and he was saying UK has no guilty and all happened because of corrupted Chinese officer which is ridiculous claim . Or  I just watched movie called "Lincoln" about American civil war and it shows the war like north angels try to save blacks from slavery which is in fact nothing to do with real reason. Real reason was economy and cheap work forces etc..

If you live here involve to locals and their lifes they will not hurt you do not worry..while you living here a lot of years long and still not even seen a real village or been in a visit of a regular local families house.It is a big sorry for you. Plus those foundations ...non of them are competent people about the field what they doing...because of those people westerner does not mean they are competent about everything.For example i expect a pedagogy studied person for a kid foundation instead of dealer of craft or something...

There are some night bazaars, markets in Bali. They called traditional market or night markets too. One of them is like biggest one and like a central one in Denpasar. Old Denpasar or Old City or Old City Center. This one called Badung Market too and it is 24 hours open, night and day. Because nowadays Denpasar' most crowded areas around Jl. Teuku Umar, Renon etc..

Prices cheap, fruits meats and fishes mostly fresh there.

Pura ( Balinese Temple )

Pura is the name of Balinese Temple or it means temple. So when you say  " Pura ..." it means ".... Temple". They usually looks like Chinese and Japanese pagodas but Balinese people are Hindu. It is not like temples in India.

Balinese Names

In Bali there is special naming system which different than most of the world. For instance they do not use a surname or family name . In fact there is also no first name. There are four names only. Yes only 4. Which means first, second, third and fourth child. This is based on Hinduism's caste system. Balinese people are Hindu but they are not really following caste system as it is in India. But the names comes from Sanskrit or Hindi languages. 

Balinese Names

I and Ni means like Mr. and Mrs. in English

1. First born child       Wayan - Putu, Gede, Ni Luh, Iluh, Luh,
2. Second born child  Made  - Kadek, Adek, Ade, Nengah,
3. Third born child      Komang - Nyoman, Man, Mang,
4. Forth born child      Ketut   - Tut,

What if you have fifth kid? They just return to Wayan again and if sixth become Made again and so on. The other name is in fact peoples real name next to this names. It is not a family name. For example I Made Surita. Surita is the real name but they call each other mostly with these four birth order names. So if you call the person Surita even their relatives can not know who you talking about sometimes.

Also there are some other names based on caste or regional  things or pointing their elder relatives hero, king, priest, noble, important person etc.. Such as Gusti, Dewa, Dwi, Bagus Ayu, Agung....

Pasar Burung - Bird Market Bali

There is a place in Bali namely Bird Market. This place is like a market for pets. You can find almost all small animals like dogs, cats, birds, fishes, monkeys, turtles, parrots etc.. Also products such as kennels, carriers, cages, foods, traditional cages such as bamboo made cages etc..

 I found Pasar Burung is little bit filthy place and animals condition there is heart wrenching. They put dogs and cats in very small and dirty cages. Most of them probably do not have any vaccine or fake vaccine labels in their books.

So i am not sure if i recommend you to buy pets from there. Because any animal you buy from there will means you support them to continue it. I hope they will fix it soon. Or if you think ok i just save one of them from there yeah go for it.

There are also many cases about foundations and foreigners so i do not want to talk about this more. Because when people read such things they interpret it strangely and generalize things and it cause put a bad reputation on a nation which i do not like. I am personally against to sell animals. It is very deep topic anyway. It is just an option if you looking for an animal to buy.

How to find it? It is inside Denpasar which is not very touristic place if you compare with coasts of Bali. On Jalan Veteran ( jalan means road or street in Indonesian) but let me tell you the roads around that area mostly one way and you can hardly see one way sign.

Bali' Tropical Fruits

Bali Island is a tropical area and because of this reason it has lots of strange fruits, vegetables, plants and even animals there like entire Indonesia has.It is not only because it is tropical place but geographical condition. Indonesia is archipelago which has thousands of islands and isles. So their species are little bit different than the rest of the world. Well some of them extinct but anyway they still have some of them. I want to list here fruits especially. Maybe you familiar with Ananas, Coconut and Papaya but there are other fruits which probably you never heard or seen in your life. They are very healthy fruits like all other fruits anyway but only lackness maybe fiber because of rain. Rainy areas fruits and vegetables mostly has less fiber they said. Anyway eat fruits and vegetables even they have less fibers.

Fruits of Bali and Indonesia 

Here is list maybe not completed but i can update it later on. 

Snake Fruit - Salak

Local people call it salak. They name it snake fruit because of its armour looks like snake skin i guess. You can find it in Malaysia too. Balinese Salak is different than Jakarta one. Taste and appearance is little bit different. Salak is the maybe most famous one i can say among all fruits in Bali.

Durian

Big melon sized and strange fruit. It has also strange armour with sharp big thorns and it is hard skin. You can not easily open it. Durian also has very strange smell once you open it. Also it has alcohol effect it said. I ate several times but it did not make me anything. The flesh of Durian also like sticky and smelly but not that bad taste.

Luwak Coffee

This is not a fruit maybe technically it is but i wanted to put here. From that animal Luwak and its poo. Yes it is a poo or from poo but maybe the most expensive coffee in the world. Well in Bali it is not that expensive. 

Papaya

Papaya can be found in different areas in the world too. It is not originally from Bali itself but you can find it in Bali a lot too. Probably you familiar with it and its taste anyway.  If not let me tell you it is like melon but orange color and taste slightly different. I like to eat it with lemon. 

Custard Apple

It is hard to eat this one because of hard its hard shell.

Mango

Mango probably you familiar. They call it Manga in local language. There are many kind of Mango in fact. Some of them are really tasty. 

Cashew

They call it something like Kaju in Bali. Cashew uses as a nut in fact and you can find in everywhere in Bali.

Jackfruit

Strange name isn't it? It looks like durian little bit but it is different. Local people dry it and eat it that way mostly.

Lychee

I like its juice  more than its fruit.

Rambutan

Rambutan is also from Malay Archipelago not specially from Bali only. Rambutan means hairy in Malay language. You can see it looks like hairy small ball.  

Duku 

Duku looks like Longan but different. 

Coconut

Maybe it is not Balinese but tropical fruit but that you can find a lot of them in Bali. A coconut can keep you alive without eating anything it said. Because it is water is like natural electrolyte. And its body very nutritious.  

Dragon Fruit

This one also my favorite. Not maybe taste. Taste of it little bit dry to eat it. Dragon fruit also called as Pitaya. 

Star Fruit

It is name come from its shape. Actually it does not look like star much.

Cacao

Cacao is hilly areas of Bali can be found mostly. 

Ananas

Ananas also one of the fruit you are familiar. 

Passion Fruit

It is little bit sour

Wani

It is a kind of mango but inside is white.

Jambu - Red Water Apple - Rose Apple

Jambu is local name but also internationally mostly called with this name. It has not much taste anyway. I can not say it is my favorite at least. It has also white one which name is White Water Apple. 

Balinese Orange

Balinese Orange, Orange Bali or Jeruk Bali is an orange in fact but it is size maybe 4 times bigger than normal orange. It looks like grapefruit actually more than orange but it is different type of orange believe or not.

Manggis

This is my favorite all time. They call it Purple Mangosteen, Manggis, Mangis. It comes from originally Sunda Islands it said.

Kelengkeng - Longan - Lengkeng

A small fruit similar with Duku but its different taste and shape inside. 

Soursop

This one also look like vegetable. Tomato also technically fruit anyway. 

Kacang - Balinese Peanut

Peanut of Bali smaller than normal peanut.

Cassava

Cassava maybe also not fruit. People eat its roots and make chips with it like potato or sweet potato.

Guava

You can eat by peeling it or without peeling it.

You can find all those fruits cheap at night market in Bali. It is not only open at night but day time too.

Le Mayeur Museum

It is named a Belgian pioneer painting artist expatriate Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres ( 1880-1958 ) who lived past years of his life in Bali. He was the one of pioneer expatriates in Bali. It is mostly said first artists came to this island and now it is sun and sea tourism destination. But long time ago it was back packers and artists place to visit. And one of those artists and famous one is Adrien Jean Le Mayeur. In 1932 he first came to Bali with boat to Singaraja which is old capital of Bali. Then lived in Denpasar. He felt in love with this island and its people and culture like most of people did. He met with 15 years old Balinese Dancer Ni Nyoman Pollok and later on married with her. She posed for most of his paintings. He first made an exhibition in Singapore in 1933 and became very successful.After he returned Bali from Singapore he bought a land and built a house at Sanur Beach


After he died in 1958 his house changed to a museum.

Bajra Sadhi Monument

Bali maybe mostly sun and sea tourism destination nowadays. But there are places to see inside the Denpasar City too. One of them is monument inside a park which surrounded by government buildings near Renon Area. 

Bajra Sadhi Monument is symbol of Balinese People struggle against Dutch colonial. It built in Puputan Margarana Square. Puputan means suicide in local language. So this name also related with this monument. Because last puputan organized during this conflict by Balinese Hero Ngurah Rai. Bajra means bell. It shaped as a bell. 

The best time to visit there sunday mornings. because it is inside a wide park you can see many local people there that time too. The road closed untill noon that time. 

It is not only monument but a small museum which inside there are dioramas.

Mother Temple - Besakih

Mother Temple 

         There are many temples in Bali that is why they call it 'island of gods'. There are small ones and big ones, for families and big families and areas and some series of important temples. Those all are hindu temples. But there is a temple which is main temple. Mother temple of all followers Balinese people. The name is also Besakih Temple. It may come from its location. Or other names Besakih Mother Temple or Pura Besakih. Pura means temple in Balinese. The area temple located namely Besakih on slopes Mounth Agung which is an active volcano actually and the highest mountain in Bali right now. It is also a tourism destination and one of the must see place in your visit. Besakih Temple in fact not only one single temple but like a complex of temples. It is like a small fort with lots of temples inside.

     Like i said it is belong to all Balinese people. There is a reason for it and it is not only a religious reason but ancesteral. Why? Because Balinese people when they first immigrate here to island from Java Island ( yes they are not original people of Island, Original Balinese People is called Bali Aga or Trunyan People) around 40 Clan came to island and they built this temple and inside the temple there are temples for each 40 clan. Now all the people in Bali are member of one of this clan and automatically member of one of this temple there.

Galungan and Kuningan

Galungan soon will start for 2012 in Bali. What is The Galungan? Galungan a kind of holiday in Bali which ends with Kuningan. According to Balinese calendar it starts in different days in every year. Sometimes twice a year it took place because it calculated by 210 day calendar. So means it take place in every seven months. This year in 2012 it will start  29 august and Kuningan is 8 september. In Balinese Hinduism belief during Galungan their deceased ancestors visiting the earth. To welcome them, people clean temples, make offerings, dances and lots of penjors ( a bamboo pole ) set on sides of roads. If you see penjors around the roads you can know this is galungan time in Bali as a foreigner.

Anyway I say "Selamat Hari Raya Galungan dan Kuningan"( Happy Galungan and Kuningan ).

Happy Independence Day Indonesia

Today  ( 17 August ) is 67th Indonesia's Independence Day. I wish happy Independence Day for Indonesia and their citizens.


Brief History of Independence of Indonesia

17 August 1945 Soekarno proclaimed Independence of Indonesia and this day became Day of Independence.

First westerners coming to Indonesia were Portugueses (1511), Spaniards and then Dutch and British and last one Japaneses in II World War for about four years. During the discoveries of new continents ( New World ) Portuguese traders came to Indonesia for raw materials and spices mostly. Soon Dutch overpowered on Indonesia and became dominant power. The name of Batavia is coming from Dutch times for Jakarta area used.

In Indonesia there were kingdoms before occupations of west and first attempt against them was in 1666 by Sultan Hasanuddin of Goa which resulted by failure. In 1680 Prince Trunojoyo of Madura also defeated and killed by Dutch. In 1740 Chinese residents attempted a riot which later on Indonesians also involved but also failed and around ten thousand Chinese killed.


British came in 1714 but only stayed in Sumatera but Dutch was under occupation of Napoleon' France shortly they ruled Indonesia. After fall of Napoleon Dutch strengthened again and hold power but attempts against rule of Dutch continued.

Thomas Matulessy (Pattimura) revolt in Moluccas 1816-1818. The Java War 1825-1830 by Prince Diponegoro of Mataram. In west Sumatera, Padri War by Tuanku Imam Bonjol and in North Sumatera, Aceh War by Teuku Umar 1873-1903. Revolt in 1907 by King Sisingamangaraja of the Bataks. Also in 1908 Dutch attacked Bali and defended by King Udayana and repelled. Some other revolts also occurred in different islands and places such as Goa, Sulawesi, Kalimantan. But all of those attempts was failed or partly succeeded.

Nationalist awakening rouse by founding Budi Utomo by Dr. Soetomo on 20 may 1908. Founding aim was improvement of education, culture and awareness but turned a politic movement later on. It is founded by intellectuals considerably. Soon founded associations and parties. But most of leaders arrested or exiled by Dutch authorities.

In march 1942 Dutch forces surrendered to Japanese Army. Leaders like Soekorno and Hatta released same year. During the Japanese occupation four millions Indonesian died from starving and forced labor. During this occupation anthem, language and flag accepted by nationally. After two days of Japanese surrender in war Soekorno proclaimed Independence of Indonesia and became first president of Indonesia while Drs. Mohammad Hatta is vice president.

Nyepi

Nyepi or Hari Raya Nyepi is Balinese new year. On this day you can not go out or turn on lights. Only hospitals or police allowed this day to use electricity. It is day of silence and new year of Saka Calendar. For locals day for meditation, silence, fasting and so on religious rituals.


Each year it takes place on different days. In 2012 it was on 23  march and in 2013 it will be on 12 march. It has some calculation to find. It is based on Saka Calendar of Bali.

You can see at the mid night of this day Ogoh-ogoh which symbolize demons. They do parade first and fight with other villages ogoh-ogoh and then burn it. There is also competition for beauty contest for ogoh-ogoh. In fact it is one of the rituals parading them demonstrating to fight each other and then burn them. During this day there are several other rituals too but this one maybe the only one worth to watch.

Saka

In Bali' complicated culture and rituals there is also a calendar. In fact there is more than one calendar. Two of them. But the one they use even now is namely Saka. You can hear on Bali local people name almost everyday and specify days as good day bad day etc according to this calendar. They even arrange their weddings, ceremonies and special events by this calender with advice of clerics who has studied about Balinese culture and religion and tradition.

This calendar starts with nyepi  which all of expatriates here familiar with this name i guess. Because in nyepi you should not go out from home or turn on any light. Island will turn to a ghost city this day. It is a lunar calendar. It has months as follow;

 Other Balinese calendar is Pawukon which is 210 days calendar.
